Bag Piece

Over this past summer, we were able to attend Yoko Ono's exhibit at the MoMA titled "One Woman Show". Her exhibition displayed various forms of expression including writing, illustration, music, film, and performance. One aspect of her show was interactive titled "Bag Piece". In this piece she invited the public to put on a large black bag and do whatever they pleased in a platformed corner of the room. While you were on display for everyone else to watch, they could not see you inside the bag. However, from inside the bag you could see outside. While we were there, Katie Joy was able to participate in "Bag Piece". Below is Katie's perspective on her contribution to Yoko's performance piece.

"I didn't think I would want to participate, but I just felt moved when I was there... I have always enjoyed performance art, but at the time I was over eight and half months pregnant. As I placed the large black cloth over me, I became invisible and I loved that feeling. I was able create shapes through movement or stillness with my body. I felt a peace of mind throughout the entire experience. As I continued performing, I began to feel as though I was not my presenting myself in my own skin anymore. Many people stood and watched me move, some walked by, but majority watched until I revealed myself from underneath the cloth."
